Smyrna Tub-to-Shower Conversions

Serving Smyrna, Cobb County, GA

A lot of Smyrna's housing is on the smaller side. Nearly 18 percent of homes are townhomes and other attached single-family houses, and more than a quarter were built before 1980, the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey shows. If your home has one main bathroom built around a standard five-foot tub, and nobody in the house takes baths, that tub is taking up the most useful space in the room.

A tub-to-shower conversion puts a walk-in shower in its place. TrueNorth Showers is based in neighboring Marietta, and Robert, the owner, does every Smyrna conversion himself. Most take 1 to 3 days.

The five-foot alcove

Most hall baths are built around a 60-inch tub tucked between three walls. That’s good news for a conversion. A 60-inch shower base drops into the same opening, so the job stays inside the alcove instead of turning into a full remodel. The tub comes out, the subfloor under it gets checked, the drain is moved to line up with the new base, and seamless panels go up on the three walls. Because the walls around the alcove stay where they are, the vanity, the toilet, and the rest of the floor can be left alone.

Making a small bathroom work harder

In a compact bathroom, every choice shows. A few that help:

  • light, seamless wall panels instead of busy tile and grout lines
  • a sliding door or a fixed glass panel, so nothing swings into the room
  • a fold-down seat, which stays out of the way when you don’t need it

Clear glass also lets light from the rest of the bathroom reach the shower, which makes the whole room feel bigger.

Older homes and newer ones

More than a quarter of Smyrna’s homes were built before 1980. In those, slow leaks have had decades to work on the floor under the tub, so expect the subfloor to be checked closely, and repaired if it’s soft, before the new base goes in. In a townhome from the 2000s, the tub is often a one-piece unit with a molded surround, which comes out in sections. Either way, wood blocking can go into the open walls so grab bars can be added later.
